Does anybody know how you go about getting bike stands/lockers put in places around town? I recently joined the YMCA in midtown and even though they have a lot of bikers they only have one old rack that won't even fit most bikes/locks. Also, the midtown Safeway suprisingly doesn't even have a rack available.

Yes, insufficient bike racks are a constant problem in this area. I usually try to find something else to lock my bike to, such as a street lamp,a flag pole, or the railings where the shopping carts are parked (make sure to put your bike so it's out of the way and won't get damaged).
The next best thing is to let the store managers know about the lack of bike racks.

Once I walked my cycle into the grocery store. There was only one space in the rack (the rest broken out) and it had a bike. The manager found me in the check-out line and asked me to remove the bike. I advised him that parking was inadequate and I didn't want my bike stolen as there was no secure parking. I went back the next day and there was a poster about a bike stolen from in front of the store. The next time I went I brought a longer cable to wrap around a lamp post.

Hmmm. Shouldn't every place have good bike parking for visitors and employees? Bicyclists should always complain to the manager when there isn't good bike parking at a retail store. If that doesn't work, let SABA know. And SABA has information about bike parking on its Web site, www.sacbike.org.

BTW, the Safeway on 19th Street does have bike racks, they just aren't in the ideal location close to the front entrance. They are at the south end of the store line up.

Many megastores and shopping centers meet the technical requirement in their planning permits for bike parking with unusable racks, racks that are far away from the doors or in isolated areas where they can't be observed (leading to easy theft), or both. Remember, they cater to people that arrive by car, and bicycles are for either kids or undesirables (in the view of the store/s.c. designers). They usually don't design for pedestrian access from the street either (transit users are undesirables too...).

Some stores don't seem to mind if you bring your bike in and park it out of the way someplace while shopping. Others do. Consider that if you have a choice about where to do business.

Isn't there something in the Vehicle Code (if not, in various City ordinances) prohibiting the standard practice of locking bikes to light poles and the like?

Finally, the craziest one I've found is Kaiser! I've been to their Folsom and Roseville offices with a bike. Neither has bike racks of any kind. Both have a few bike lockers for staff but that's it. At a health care facility where they're supposedly into taking care of yourself? I've talked with Member Services about it. No joy. Go figure. I end up locking the bike to a tree or a sign near the entrance. So far I've gotten away with it. Is it any better at other Kaiser offices? (Side note: if you need your car serviced at an Automall dealer in Roseville, bring along your bike. Let the service folk mess around while you ride around. I got a Kaiser appt scheduled when I was going to have the car in, and rode over from the dealer; easy couple of minutes on streets that have nice wide bike lanes except around Wal-Mart of course.)

Has anyone noticed the bike racks located on the sidewalk next to the businesses on R Street near 15th?

They are sturdy black-painted racks in the shape of the old Big Wheel bikes. They are easy to lock your bike to and look cool, to boot!

I wish more businesses would install ones as good as these.
